Hi there,

Avaaz has enjoyed a meteoric rise over the last 4 years, rapidly
becoming the largest global web movement in history. Our membership is
at 8 million and climbing fast. The initial vision of Avaaz - of a
truly global, multilingual, multi-issue, committed movement of
citizens that can rapidly mobilize effective democratic pressure on
governments all over the planet -- has been realized.

But today our team is more taken with a sense of possibility than of
accomplishment. We feel we’ve just scratched the surface of what’s
possible with Avaaz, and we’re looking for a few absolutely
outstanding Japanese individuals to join us and help us find out just
how far our story goes.

Specifically and in the longer-term, we’re looking to hire a full time
Japanese Campaigner, or Campaign Director (depending on experience).
I’ve included details about what we’re looking for below, and would
kindly request you forward this to anyone you think might be
interested, or might be able to send it further.

If you know someone who can help us make calls, fix meetings... to
find the right people, please let us know, also. We may hire them as a
fixer to help us for a few weeks. We’re looking for a very practical
person with a deep knowledge of the Japanese political, media and
civil society worlds. We have a separate job description we can send

We don’t care so much about cover letters, or years of experience. Our
criteria for hiring for are:

-- Fluency in English and Japanese is a MUST
-- Excellent writer, able to write in an active voice, concisely and
with emotion,
-- A globalist -- familiar with a range of social and environmental
issues and the language used to write about them: human rights,
climate change, poverty, Middle East peace etc..
-- Comfortable working to extremely tight deadlines,
-- Flexibility -- able to surge at short notice,
-- Basic knowledge and proficiency in HTML code desirable but not essential,
-- Highly professional: attentive to detail, and no drama.

In our experience, we find great people by asking other great people.
Again, it doesn’t matter how many years of experience candidates have
or whether they’ve done very similar work. They might come from
politics, media, NGOs or it might be industry, education or science.

All of you are committed to social change, and we’d ask that you take
a few moments to consider this in that light - the right person at
Avaaz can really make a difference in the world. All of you have
either been extremely helpful to Avaaz staff or the organisation in
the past, and just a few moments of your time could literally make
years of difference to us and our work on the issues we all care
about.

Through relentless campaigning over the past three years, 350.org has helped build a global
grassroots movement to fight climate change. Working with diverse allies and volunteers,
our small team of young organizers has energized millions of people around the globe,
demonstrated sustainable solutions and influenced the debate on climate in the media and
among politicians. 2011-12 are key times to scale up the international movement, bring in
massive numbers of new people, hold polluters accountable, and increase the strength and
number of climate champions.

The global coordinator will be responsible for working with the global coordinating team to
shape and execute 350.org's overall global campaign strategies and plans.

The successful candidate will be a self-starter, a creative thinker, an effective team player,
tech-savvy and an articulate writer and speaker. 350.org is a dynamic, young, hardworking
organization, and this position lets you in at the ground level of an exciting new campaign.

CORE RESPONSIBILITY
In conjunction with the Global Co-Directors and Global Core Team, establish and manage
volunteer leadership teams and some hired field staff and interns to meet 350.org’s global,
regional, and national-level campaign objectives and build a broader, deeper and more
committed movement.

MAIN DUTIES
● Help develop and implement a robust mobilization strategy for 2011-12, taking into
account 350.org’s campaign objectives.
● Build, support, and/or manage national and regional teams internationally.
● Guide and mentor staff and community leaders, and provide opportunities for them to
develop their organizing skill set.
● Recruit, mobilize and develop buy-in from key allies and leaders at the national, regional,
and global levels.
● Maintain a working knowledge of the issue and of the political, legislative, regulatory and
economic framework relevant to the campaign.
● At times, represent 350.org and the campaign at events, and with grassroots activist
groups, decision-makers, donors, and other allies, including the environmental
community at large.
● Keep Global Coordinating Team and core strategy team informed of local activities and
changes in tactics, or strategies if necessary.
● Collect and disseminate stories of victory and struggle from all around the world on a
regular basis, using new media and other communications tools.

QUALIFICATIONS
We don’t care much about years of experience, CVs or degrees – mostly, we’re looking for an
individual who is creative, hardworking, organized, dedicated, self-motivated and a fast learner.

Skills:

• Proven leadership in campaign execution
• Strong staff management and delegation instincts
• Highly organized and competent at managing multiple projects at once
• Excellent verbal and written communication (English required, other languages a plus)
• Problem solving, strategy-development, and creative thinking
• Ability to use new media, mobile, web and other technologies effectively

Assets:
● Proven ability to work both independently and in close coordination with a team,
including managing staff working remotely.
● Commitment to empowering others and building grassroots power as a means to affect
change.
● Demonstrated experience in cross-class/race/generational/international organizing.
● Experience in coalition-building and an ability to recognize and develop the diverse
strengths of different kinds of organizations and organizers for one cause.
● Willingness to travel for site visits, training, and events and ability to work well from
remote locations.
● Experience as an activist and organizer in the climate movement is a plus.

Chemical and Nuclear Weapons:
The Ban on WMD in Perspective
**********************************

On commemorating the Memorial Day the atomic bomb destroyed the city of
Hiroshima, victims of poison gas affected during Iran-Iraq war visit
Hiroshima and Tokyo. They call themselves "Hibakusha", which originally
means survivors of the atomic-bombing of Hiroshima. In Hiroshima, there are
also many victims suffering from poison gas. In the wartime, a research and
development of poison gas armaments took place at the former Army and
Scientific Research Institute in Tokyo, and great amounts were produced at
the plant on Okunoshima Island of Hiroshima Prefecture. Former workers at
the plant are still suffering the consequences of the consecutive exposure
to the gas. Hiroshima has been receiving a high reputation not only for
radiotherapy but also for treatment for detoxification.

International humanitarian law has been providing comprehensive frameworks
for preventing and addressing the terrible effects on civilian populations
of conventional weapons that continue to kill and maim long after conflicts
have ended. Since the forum takes place three days before the Memorial Day
of the world's first atomic bomb attack on the city of Hiroshima and twelve
days before the anniversary of the end of the Pacific War, it could be a
timely event and good opportunity for Japanese public to think how we as
human beings can stop or at least prevent unnecessary sufferings and to
understand the inhumanity of WMD.

The keynote speaker is an Iranian Doctor, Dr. Shahriar Khateri, who has been
treating patients affected by chemical/biological weapons used during
Iran-Iraq War. He also plays a leading role in the projects of the new
Tehran Peace Museum. The topic of his presentation is "Casualties of
Chemical Warfare in Iran: Response of Iranian Civil Society to the Tragedy."
Short comments of Prof. Mustapha Kamal Pasha of University of Aberdeen
follow the presentation.

The second part is a panel discussion among three speakers livened up by a
moderator. Main theme and individual topics can be found below. A Q&A
session is to follow.

We hear about HIV & AIDS on the news but we do we really know the difference between them both?
What about the people whose lives have been affected by this potentially lethal infection?
What about their families?

In this workshop we will concentrate on real people with real lives.
Yes, the worst affected areas in the world are in poverty-stricken nations.
But we will also concentrate on our own doorstep.
Here in Japan maybe we can’t see it, but figures show HIV & AIDS are here and given any chance it is willing to spread.

Amidst mixed reflections about the outcome of UN Climate Conference in
Copenhagen last year, global voices present in UNFCCC/COP-15 were convinced
that climate change is an unprecedented challenge and is negatively
impacting life of living beings, livelihoods of poor and equilibrium of

to benefit the world without universally acceptable and legally binding
agreement. Urgency for immediate and adequate actions to 'adapt to climate
change' before its impacts become unmanageable – has also gained
considerable priority in the recent climate debate. UNU in resonance with
international body of scholars also believes that while adaptation offers
opportunity for all to prepare for long-term consequences of a changing
climate, robust and appropriate decisions to arrest Green-House-Gases (GHGs)
should also compliment the process without further delay. However, in
addition to augment adequate financial and technological resources,
capacities to act rapidly also need to be amplified in the world over.

To discuss these emergent issues further towards optimizing possible
opportunities in the 2010 UN Climate Change Conference in Mexico, United
Nations University Institute for Sustainability and Peace is organizing an
open Colloquium on 19th May 2010. The Colloquium is aimed at galvanizing the
opinions of policymakers, administrators, researchers and the public towards
achieving following key objectives:

- Reassuring that climate change is topmost concern of present generation
to ensure that future generations also enjoy the similar, if not better,
benefits from planet earth;
- Advocating for robust decisions by the governments at all levels,
appealing for avoidance of delays, while accepting certain degree of
scientific uncertainty;
- Retrofitting policy and public opinions by engaging synergistic
thinking and promoting analytical discourse.

Participation in the colloquium is open to all and is specifically targeting
at academia including students, researchers, scientists, activists,
environmental NPOs/NGOs, administrators, representatives from embassies,
international organizations, media and concerned citizens. Key note speeches
will be delivered by some of the renowned climate change experts of present
times. Panel discussion will help to get further inputs from wide spectrum
of practitioners and policy makers. Concluding session will include
interaction with the audience.

Dear Prime Minister Harper:

Earlier this year, you announced that maternal health will be a development
priority at the G8 Summit in June. However, since this announcement, members
of your cabinet have publicly stated that the government’s maternal health
strategy will not address unsafe abortions in developing countries or
support access to family planning and contraceptives. While we commend your
commitment to “champion a major initiative to improve the health of women
and children in the world’s poorest regions,”[1] we know that in order to
do so, the initiative must address the comprehensive maternal and
reproductive health care needs of women, including access to safe abortion
care.

The scientific evidence is overwhelming―access to safe, legal abortion care
preserves women’s health and saves women’s lives. Unsafe abortion remains
one of the leading causes of maternal mortality in developing nations.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), nearly 70,000 women
worldwide die from unsafe abortions annually and millions more are injured,
many permanently.[2]



International health and development agencies, including Amnesty
International and the United Nations, consistently link contraception and
maternal health in the developing world. Recent research by the Guttmacher
Institute and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) also found that
seventy percent of maternal deaths would be averted and newborn deaths cut
nearly in half, if existing unmet family planning and maternal and newborn
health needs were met.[3]



At last year’s G8 Summit in Italy, the G8 heads of government agreed that
maternal and child health was one of the world’s most pressing global
health problems. They committed to “accelerat[ing] progress…on maternal
health, including through sexual and reproductive health care and services
and voluntary family planning.”[4] It is imperative that the work done in
Canada build on―not backtrack from―previous commitments. Sexual and
reproductive health and rights, especially access to family planning,
including contraception and safe abortion care, must be a central component
of the initiative.

The G8 Summit comes at a critical time. In addition to the G8 and G20
meetings in Canada, world leaders will gather at the United Nations in
September 2010, to take stock of progress on the Millennium Development
Goals (MDGs) including MDG5 to reduce maternal mortality by three quarters
and establish universal access to reproductive health care by 2015.[5] This
is the Goal toward which the least progress has been made by governments.
The G8 maternal and child health initiative must be situated within the
broader strategy toward achievement of the eight MDGs by 2015.

This is a significant opportunity to champion the health of some of the
world’s poorest women. We ask that you honour Canada’s long-standing
tradition of recognizing women’s reproductive rights and urge you to
include access to contraception and abortion care in your initiative to
improve maternal health care.

The reports are dire: in 38 years, our oceans could be completely fished-out, in 100 years, all coral reefs might be dead. This action alone won’t be enough to turn the tide. But it will establish a 210,000 square-mile Marine Protected Area -- bigger than the Great Barrier Reef.

To truly save the world’s oceans from collapse will require bold political leadership and dedicated citizens taking action. In 2010, the International Year of Biodiversity, a UK decision to create the world's largest Marine Protected Area would secure a conservation legacy almost unrivalled in scale and significance. This would set a clear example to other governments around the world.
